These colourful individual hand carved wooden “Colonial figures” or colon figures originate in west Africa in the Ivory Coast during the colonial period. “Colon” is the French noun for a colonist. The figures convey European colonial... representing an unusual mix of African and European cultures. Since the end of the last century, anecdotal figures depicting Baule people as colonialists wearing European cloth have been carved for the tourists. The men either wear pith helmets or Fez hats.
