These colourful individual hand carved wooden “Colonial figures” or colon figures originate in west Africa in the Ivory Coast during the colonial period. “Colon” is the French noun for a colonist. Wooden colonial figures are hand-carved and hand-painted by the Baule Tribe of Ivory Coast. These unique wooden figures may have slight imperfections which are not considered flaws but add character to the piece.
